The Discipleship Journey

In Revelations 3 we read the following words, which John quoted Jesus saying to the Church in Laodicea: “Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.” (Revelations 3:19-22 NIV)

This month’s Network 20 equipping materials were written by Eurasia Region Co-Leader, Isken Moldobaev. They are titled, “The Discipleship Journey.” In the first of four lessons, Isken writes the following:

“Discipleship begins with an invitation to come and follow Jesus. It does not start with a microphone or a list of rules, but at a table. In our modern world, we often try to make disciples by giving people information, but Jesus began by sharing meals and spending time with people.”

“The table is where people can come weary, unsure, or empty and still be welcomed. Jesus used the table to show hospitality to those who were lost long before He corrected them. When we invite people into our lives without expecting them to perform or pretend, their masks begin to fall away. Belonging comes before belief. By creating places of grace around our own tables, we lay the foundation for the Holy Spirit to change hearts.”
