Making Disciples in Eritrea

My name is Eyob Arefaine. Soon after accepting Jesus as my personal Savior, I began serving in the church. That was over 20 years ago. This year, I began my journey with Network 20. I find it deeply meaningful because disciple-making is what God has placed on my heart.

My heart and vision for discipleship in my country is to see believers become fully committed disciples of Jesus who faithfully follow Him and are grounded in God’s Word. For this reason, I patiently invest in helping young men come to faith and grow through intentional discipleship. Sometimes, I travel long distances just to meet with one person. I am now preparing to travel to Eritrea to make and equip more disciples.

In countries where evangelism is illegal, one of the few ways to make disciples is through underground house churches. One of the main challenges is that disciple-makers are often under constant surveillance. The government actively pursues ministers involved in evangelism and disciple-making. However, these challenges have also created opportunities for believers to gather in house churches, which we call “home cells.”

I plan to equip and support leaders by walking closely with them through the discipleship process. I have identified several grassroots leaders who show strong potential. Currently, I am discipling Eritrean refugees living in Ethiopia, but my plan is to expand this work by traveling to Eritrea and helping establish disciple-making ministry there, as many young men still need to be reached.
