This week I spoke at my friend Allen’s memorial service. Below is a sample of my remarks.
Today, we remember and give thanks for the life of Allen—a man who loved God above all, deeply loved his family, shared his wisdom generously, and sought to help people discover and fulfill the purposes God had for them.
When I look back over more than a decade of knowing Allen, one thing stands out: based on his relationship with his Heavenly Father, he had a heart for helping others succeed.
Allen had a gift for asking good questions and offering practical wisdom. He encouraged me to understand my strengths and recognize my limitations. He reminded me that ministry is not simply about transferring knowledge; it is about transformation. It is about helping people become who God created them to be.
That conviction was especially evident in his concern for young men. Through our work with Network 20 (the organization I direct), Allen helped our leaders understand their gifts, personalities, and potential. He wanted to see them find their place, grow in character, and become fruitful in their service to God. He understood the importance of older men investing in younger men, offering the guidance and encouragement that can make such a difference in a person’s life.
Allen’s influence went beyond practical advice. Our conversations frequently returned to the heart of being a disciple of Jesus: learning to trust God, abide in His love, listen for His direction, and obey Him.
Today, I am reminded that a person’s influence cannot be measured simply by the years they live or the things they accomplish. It is also measured by the people they encourage, the wisdom they share, and the lives they help shape out of their love for Jesus.
I know he has been welcomed by our Father in Heaven. WHY? Allen was truly dedicated to Jesus as his Lord and Savior.
How about you? Will you be welcomed by our Father in heaven?
