Jesus was a Rabbi. In the context of his time, Jesus operated as an itinerant rabbi. On-line I read that, “He fulfilled this role by mastering the Torah, gathering disciples, traveling to teach in synagogues, and using traditional Jewish methods of scriptural interpretation, debate, and parables.”

What does it mean that Jesus gathered disciples? “Unlike formal academy teachers, ancient rabbis like Jesus invited students to follow them closely, learning not just the text but the rabbi’s way of living and interpreting life.” In addition, Jesus spoke with personal authority, which was different from the religious leaders of that day who referenced previous scholars. Jesus said, “But I tell you.” Jesus welcomed those who may have been excluded by other rabbis. Finally, He focused on inner transformation vs. outward obedience.

If we claim Jesus as Lord and Savior, we are His disciples and called to imitate Him. Every disciple of Jesus is to be a Rabbi! Rabbis rise up!
