Every important decision in life deserves careful thought. As disciples of Jesus, we should not rush into actions based on emotion or pressure. Instead, Scripture teaches us to examine our hearts and seek God’s purpose in everything we do.
One simple and powerful way to do this is to ask yourself the question “Why?” four times. This practice helps uncover hidden motives, align your decisions with God’s Word, and keep your heart honest before Him. Often, our first answer to “Why” is superficial. But when we ask again and again, we dig deeper until the real intention is revealed. The Bible repeatedly shows us that God looks not at the outward action, but at the motives of the heart. “. . . The LORD searches every heart and understands every motive behind the thoughts.” (1 Chronicles 28:9 NIV)
As you seek God’s plans and purposes, here’s what asking WHY four times may uncover.
1. The first WHY—your surface reason.
2. The second WHY—the influences shaping you (fear, pride, comparison, pressure).
3. The third WHY—your deeper desires and longings.
4. The fourth WHY—the true motive that God is calling you to examine.
FOR EXAMPLE: You want to go on a mission to another country. WHY? You desire to be used by God to be a blessing to others. WHY? You sense a need to be used by Him and often feel like your daily activities lack meaning. WHY? When you are in your normal routine, often you are bored and waste time on mindless entertainment. WHY? You have not sought God’s will regarding how you may be a blessing to people in your everyday routine so you think you have to go on a mission to have meaning, which is not true.
When you face something important—pause and ask God WHY? WHY? WHY? and WHY? As you reach the end of this process, most likely you will find yourself in close fellowship with God so that He can best direct you.
